Alvin Yu (余漢維) grew up in a musical family. His mother is a piano and vocal teacher, and his father loves to play the piano. His two older brothers are also passionate about music: his second brother is a professor of cello at Utah Tech University, while his eldest brother is completing his doctorate degree in music. From a young age, Alvin loved listening to hymns and enjoyed singing and playing them from the songbooks. After becoming a Christian in 1997, Alvin began serving in church as a pianist, choir member, and worship team leader. His services in music continue to this day.

During his secondary school years, Alvin attended St. Paul’s College in Hong Kong, a school that placed great emphasis on music. He participated in various extracurricular music activities, including playing the piano and organ at school assemblies, singing in the choir, Chinese orchestra, and the symphony orchestra. In his last year, Alvin served as the choir conductor and led the choir to win the “Best Boy’s Choir” award at the Hong Kong Music Festival in 2002.

After immigrating to the United States, Alvin obtained his Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude from the University of Oregon in 2007 and later earned a master’s degree in music theory from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2011. In 2013, he was invited by the Joint Choir of the Portland Association of Chinese Evangelists (PACE) to compose choral anthems for their evangelistic meeting and Thanksgiving events, marking the beginning of his journey in choral composition. His works have been performed by New Heart Music Ministries (新心音樂事工), Chinese Christian Church Music Institute for Worship (中華基督教會崇拜音樂學院), as well as churches in Atlanta and Seattle.

Other than composing, Alvin is also fond of showcasing Chinese music to the American audiences in occasions such as the celebration for Chinese New Year, where he performs traditional Chinese music on the two-string instrument Erhu (二胡). He started learning the Erhu when his high school’s Chinese Orchestra was out of Erhu players. He was one of a few violinists who was recruited to learn the Erhu. Since then, he has enjoyed playing this unique instrument.

He currently resides in Atlanta with his wife Rachel and daughter Sophia.
